If you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant you may want to consider having a Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Screening test performed on yourself and your partner. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited condition that is caused by an abnormal gene in the body which affect mucus production. Those who have CF have difficulty breathing as well as digestion problems and generally only live about 30 years.
Since your baby will get half of his or her genetic material from you and half from your partner both parents are tested for the carrier gene. If both parents have the gene then it could be possible that your baby will have CF. If you have a family history of CF you may want to take the test and have your baby tested in order to give you and your partner more time to adjust and get ready for the extra care required.
